Anglers rescued after boat capsizes on Great Barrier Reef

A PAIR of fishermen who came into strife on the Great Barrier Reef have been rescued from their overturned boat by a passing crew of Crown-of-Thorns starfish (COTS) control divers.

COTS boat Venus II was diverted from its operational area by rescue authorities to recover the two fishers who encountered trouble at Otter Reef, 60km off Cardwell, about 1am on Thursday.

The stricken anglers were recovered and are being taken to Cairns this afternoon.

COTS targeted control-program project manager Steve Moon said both fishers were treated for shock and were resting comfortably on-board Venus II.

"This is not the first emergency we have responded to, and won't be the last," he said.

"Luckily, we are always prepared for such emergencies with very highly trained crews who are always prepared for such events."
