American road trip a tantalising prospect, if I win lotto
I WAS talking to a mate on Saturday night. I was at home in Gladstone and he was sitting in a hotel room in Chicago.
He's halfway through hosting a guided tour from one side of the United States to almost the other, and back.
And all within the space of a month. It's the first of three tours he's doing this year.
Today he and the other 40 people on the tour - in 20 latest model Ford Mustang convertibles - start on their way back, along the famous Route 66.
Noddy (that's what everyone calls him - his real name is Graeme, but nobody uses that) has been running these tours for about six years now.
He restricts the numbers to 40 people and each time he's had a full complement of people.
The tour group meets in Los Angeles to be greeted by 20 shiny Muzzies, and they get to choose their colour.
The following day they head off east and end up at night staying in the same hotel. For the rest of the day they do what they want, go to see what they want to see, either individually or as a group.
I haven't been on one of Noddy's tours yet, but it's sitting there on my bucket list.
He's added an extra tour this year.
As well as the two Route 66 trips, he's also taking 28 people on an east coast tour from Miami to Niagara Falls.
A few weeks ago he did a recce of the route to make sure he could take in all of the highlights.
He will arrive back in New Zealand in September after doing a heck of a lot of driving, seeing some amazing places and some incredible sights. What better way to spend one's life!
The tours are all based around a love of cars - American V8 cars - and so highlights along the way include the Henry Ford Museum and many other places where the tourists stand and drool.
It's not all cars, mind you. Noddy's organised the east coast tour to take in Cape Canaveral and the Big Apple and all of its attractions.
Next year the plan is to have four tours of Route 66 to celebrate the 50th year of the mighty Ford Mustang.
Tell you what, if I happen to win Lotto I'll be on one of those trips!
