Australian alleged terror nurse behind bars

THE Melbourne nurse charged with providing support to a terrorist organisation is behind bars.

Adam Brookman, 39, faced Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday and has been remanded in custody until November 16.

Mr Brookman returned to Australia on Friday night after surrendering to Australian Federal Police in Turkey.

The charges stem from his alleged involvement with the Islamic State in Syria

He was charged with willingly providing support to a terrorist organisation and intending to support a person to engage in a hostile activity.

Mr Brookman did not apply for bail.

Mr Brookman's lawyer, Rob Stary, told media outside the court that his client was not a terror risk.

"The Federal Police have taken the view that Mr Brookman presents as no risk to any person in Australia and the safety of Australian citizens was their primary concern in helping facilitate Mr Brookman's repatriation," Mr Stary said.
