Alleged strangler faces magistrate

A GLADSTONE man, who allegedly strangled another man until he was unconscious and then kicked him in the head, has faced Rockhampton Magistrates Court.

George Kirk, 27, is charged with one count of assault occasioning bodily harm after allegedly going to the Barney Point home of the 28-year-old victim and attacking him on New Year's Day between 12.30pm and 1pm.

Police said Kirk punched the victim four to five times and then grabbed the man by his neck and squeezed until he passed out.

It's alleged a witness, who called 000, saw him then kick the victim three times while the unconscious man lay on the ground.

The victim was taken to Gladstone Hospital with facial injuries.

The defendant appeared via telephone from the Gladstone watchhouse, represented by defence solicitor Lance Rundle.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Mick O'Rourke opposed bail and raised concerns Kirk would try to interfere with witnesses.

Magistrate Annette Hennessy refused bail saying Kirk represented an unacceptable risk.

He will next appear in the Gladstone Magistrates Court on Tuesday, January 10.
