THE trial of the man charged with the Boston Marathon terror attack is underway in a courtroom less than 4km from where two bombs exploded in 2013 with devastating force.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 21, has pleaded not guilty to 30 charges over the attack near the finish line of the marathon. The blasts killed three people and injured 260 others.

NBC News reported that Tsarnaev, in khakis and a dark shirt with sleeves rolled up, watched as Judge George O'Toole Jr addressed batches of prospective jurors before sending them off to fill out questionnaires.

It reported that the judge summoned 3000 people to the federal courthouse in Boston for the first phase of jury selection in which at least 1200 people are expected to fill out questionnaires.

Judge O'Toole said individual questioning of prospective jurors would begin January 15 and he expects opening statements around January 26.

The trial is expected to last three to four months.
