Allegations Somlyay paid wife thousands despite no work

RETIRED federal Sunshine Coast MP Alex Somlyay has been accused of defrauding taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars over the years.

The Fairfax MP allegedly billed taxpayers $69,157.17 for his wife's non-existent work in his electorate office between 2012-13.

The Age newspaper claims a woman named "Jennifer Donovan" received at least $99,000 for electorate office work dating as far back as 2003.

Donovan is the maiden name of Mr Somlyay's wife.

The Age said sources close to the electorate office did not see Mr Somlyay's wife at work during the past three years.

The source was not aware of any electorate work completed by the former MP's wife in or out of the office during this period.
