All systems go on the court

GLADSTONE Port City Power play-maker Yassine Ghomari is expecting a baptism of fire in Saturday's opening QBL match against Rockhampton Rockets at Hegvold Stadium at 8pm.

However Ghomari said his team is well-prepared and know what to expect.

"Sure they are going to be firing, but we are ready and have to be on the same page defensively," Ghomari said.

With Ray Willis out of action because of visa issues, Ghomari believes the new-look Power side needs to be wary of a side that score quick baskets in transition.

"Based on last year, they try to move the ball quickly and they have five guys that shoot on the fly," Ghomari explained.

"We are a fairly new team and are still working on our identity.

"We like to play fast-paced basketball, but need to understand how to play tempo as well and slow plays down."

A collective improvement will see the Power rise on the ladder and Ghomari also sees himself as someone who leads by example from a defensive perspective.

"I try to be a defensive leader and to also control our defence and offence as well," he said.

Power coach Brian Waters expects his team to throw everything against the hot favourites.

Sydney Kings co-captain Tom Garlepp, who has signed with the Rockets on a short-term contract, looms large for the Power to counter. However Waters will back his troops to execute the plan which has been put to place.

"I don't expect our guys to go out there and scrub off the floor," Waters said.

"They are trained to be the best basketball team, and to utilise their strengths to the best of their ability. "We totally think we are going to win the game."
