All Stars prep for Wanderers
CALLIOPE Cricket Club is gearing up for the arrival of the Wanderers Queensland Club.
Touring Queensland since 1976, the Wanderers are set to stop off in Gladstone on August 23 to take on the Gladstone All Stars.
Calliope Cricket Club secretary and treasurer Bruce Gibbs said players from all of Gladstone's clubs would be selected in the coming weeks to be a part of the All Stars team.
Calliope Cricket Grounds will host the 50-over match and Gibbs said work had already begun preparing the pitch.
He said the match was a good opportunity for the young players.
"It gives them a bit of experience," he said.
"It is a good pre-season run.
"Over the years they've had very good players in the team."
He said it was also great for children, with Scorchers women's coach Brad Murphy, who will be a team member of the Wanderers, to hold a coaching session for school-aged children before the game.
Wanderers Queensland Club president Lew Cooper said the coaching of young cricketers was important.
"That's one of the greatest things we do," he said.
With six players already notified about their selection in the Gladstone All Stars side, Gibbs said he would be ready to announce the team soon.
