All-rounder adds extra starch to Hurricanes side

THE Hobart Hurricanes' hopes of reaching the Big Bash League semi-finals have been boosted with veteran former England international all-rounder Dimitri Mascarenhas set to play his first game of the season tonight.

The Perth-born Mascarenhas (pictured) broke his jaw after being hit by a bouncer in a practice match before the competition started, but is in the squad for the showdown against the undefeated Melbourne Stars at the MCG.

Even if the fifth-placed Hurricanes lose against the Stars, they can still finish in the top four if they beat defending champions, Brisbane Heat, in Hobart on Thursday. If the Hurricanes lose that clash, the Heat will join Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers, and Sydney Sixers in the finals.

Another English veteran, batsman Owais Shah, won't line up alongside Mascarenhas after he was dropped following his poor form this season. He's scored just 52 runs at 10.40 in five matches.
