Alfie backs Thaiday’s resignation

FORMER Broncos captain Allan Langer has praised Sam Thaiday's courage in standing down as captain of the club.

Thaiday made the decision yesterday following discussions with coach Anthony Griffin in the past two weeks.

Veteran Broncos Corey Parker and Justin Hodges have been named co-captains - the first joint leadership in the club's history.

Thaiday spent two years as captain after taking the reins following Darren Lockyer's retirement in 2011.

The 28-year-old (pictured) endured a testing two years as skipper, with the Broncos finishing eighth and 12th respectively in 2012 and 2013.

Last year was the club's worst season in its history.

Thaiday noted the need to focus on his own game as the catalyst for the decision to stand down, a view shared by four-time premiership winning captain Langer.

"He probably needs to concentrate on his own game first," Langer said.

"It's a tough job and I wouldn't say he's been at 100%, but he hasn't been far off.

"Maybe taking that role off him will enable him to improve on his own game, but it's a tough job, especially taking over after Darren Lockyer and all that he had done for the club."

Langer, a Sunshine Coast resident, commended Thaiday's courage in stepping aside and said it would have been an unbelievably difficult decision to make.

"It takes a brave man to stand down," he said.

"There's been a lot of pressure on him and he's done the right thing and it's only going to benefit the club and his own game."

Langer spent seven years as captain following the retirement of Gene Miles.

"It's a tough role and you've got to accept it to be able to do it," he said.

"I was lucky and we had a great side at the time and it certainly helped to have so many senior players assist me when I first started."
