Albanese will not resign from Cabinet after spill

LONG-TIME Kevin Rudd supporter Leader of the House Anthony Albanese said he would not resign from Cabinet and add to the losses of key frontbenchers last week.

Mr Albanese told Sky News on Sunday he was not planning to resign, after four leading Labor figures were sacked or resigned last week after the failed leadership ballot. He said there was no reason why he should resign, given he still had the support of Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

"I would never support a spill against a sitting prime minister - that was my view, that is still my view," he told Sky.

Mr Albanese's comment come as the latest poll, a Galaxy Poll conducted for News Limited, found support for the Labor Party fell 3% in the past month.

The poll found support for the Liberal Party remained steady at 48%, while Labor's support fell from 35% to 32% in the past month.Interestingly, the poll also revealed support for the independent MPs and the Greens both grew in the month to March 7.

Support for independent candidates rose from 7% to 9% during the month, while Greens' backing grew 1% to 11%.

The poll was conducted before last week's leadership debacle, so did not take into account the effect of the latest political machinations in Canberra on voter sentiment.
