Airport parking fees to quadruple

NEW fees to be introduced at Gladstone Airport on July 1 should be staggered after the first two hours, according to regular users of the car park.

Gladstone resident Ben Miers suggested they be staggered after hearing Gladstone Regional Council will introduce new fees that will jump from $5 to $20 for staying in the existing car park for more than two hours.

“It should be a staggered fee structure after two hours,” he said.

“I think it’s fair you get the first two hours free,” wife, Karen, said.

The new fees will be effective from July 1, after the new long-term car park is opened.

People parking in the long-term car park will pay $10 for staying longer than two hours.

Louisa Woodhouse said the price jump was a bit extreme, but the changes wouldn’t affect her as she picks people up when they arrive.

Council’s chief executive officer, Graeme Kanofski, said council was currently in the construction stage of expanding car parking.

“We basically now have a short-term car park in front of the building,” he said.

“When we introduced car parking charges, the car park was overflowing most of the time.”

Mr Kanofski said it turned out people parking there weren’t using the airport.

“Once we get the new car park open, it will be free until July 1,” he said.
