Mayor welcomes feedback on airport sculpture

GLADSTONE Mayor Gail Sellers isn't worried about negative community reaction to a new sculpture that has been installed at Gladstone Airport.

She has maintained it was a worthy investment worth $130,000.

"I saw the comments (on The Observer's Facebook page) and isn't that good. The community is abuzz talking about this art piece.

"I think it's exciting," she said. "From where I sit it's a fantastic discussion about a piece of art.

"It's public art and that always attracts comments."

Mrs Sellers said the artwork was a good representation of Gladstone.

"We feel that the aluminium goes with the Gladstone culture. We already have one of her (Donna Marcus) pieces and we liked her work. That's why we commissioned her to do this."

Ms Sellers said she hoped Gladstone would see more public art.

The sculpture, which took more than three years from conception to installation, is attracting mass interest from those using the airport and others around town.

The project was endorsed by the Gladstone Regional Council and co-funded by a State Government grant and Queensland Alumina Ltd.
