Filling up in mid-air all in a day's work for RAAF pilots

THE sky over the Northern Territory has been filled with aircraft this month as part of the biennial Exercise Pitch Black.

The exercise is a major RAAF training activity, traditionally using bases and training areas in the Northern Territory.

Personnel which take part are Australian air crews, including RAAF Base Amberley, the United States Air Force, the Republic of Singapore Air Force, the Royal New Zealand Air Force and a number of other nations.

About 110 aircraft are being used with 2300 personnel supporting the exercise.

While many personnel have been to Australia before, a significant number of Exercise Pitch Black 14 participants are visiting for the first time.

As well as providing the air forces with useful training, it is also to strengthen the ties between Australia and its neighbours.
