Agnes Water footbridge closes for repairs

A FOOTBRIDGE in Agnes Water will be closed from next week while Gladstone Regional Council carries out repair work.

Work will be undertaken on the bridge that runs from from Palm Court to Agnes Central Shopping Centre.

Pedestrians will be required to detour around the works, with no public access from November 17-31.

Engineering Services portfolio spokesman Rick Hansen said the project, estimated to cost about $9000, would focus on replacing rotting timber, and offer overall improvements to the safety of the structure.

Works will include the removal of handrails, decking and beams, replacement of damaged parts and painting new timber.

"The footbridge is a vital piece of infrastructure which links residents and visitors to the shopping area," Cr Hansen said.

"Unfortunately the repairs will require a full closure of the much-used asset, and pedestrians will be required to use safe alternative routes to detour around the works."

Cr Hansen said the timing of the project would ensure footbridge repairs were finished before the Discovery Coast's busy end-of-year tourism season.
