Adult gamers rejoice over R18+ amendment

ADULT gamers across Queensland may soon be able to play R18+ games following an amendment introduced into parliament last week.

State Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie said amendments made to the Classification of Computer Games and Images Act 1995, would ensure the sale of the games was regulated.

"We have not had an R18+ rating for computer games previously and these amendments will mirror the current classification system for films," Mr Bleije said.

He said the film industry was an example of the classification system providing people with the necessary information they needed.

"Those purchasing the products will be required to present proof of age to ensure only those over the legal age can access the games," he said.

Bundaberg Gametraders owner Megan Murray said adults shopping at her store were very much in favour of the proposed legislation.

"I get people in here all the time saying how ridiculous the current situation it is," she said.

"With an R18+ rating, parents would be able to make an informed decision."

Ms Murray said having an R18+ rating would be beneficial to her business as customers were savvy enough to obtain a copy of banned game if they really wanted one.

"We had heaps of people asking for the latest Mortal Kombat when it was banned last year, but people still found a way to get themselves a copy," she said.

When the NewsMail spoke to Bundaberg locals yesterday most were in favour of an R18+ rating introduction.

They agreed adults should have the opportunity to make their own decisions.

November will shape up as a big month for gamers with the release of Halo 4 yesterday and the much-anticipated Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 to be released next week.
