Today is International Volunteers Day, and we're celebrating some of Gladstone's volunteers

PAINTER and former schoolteacher Adele Jones is a little bit shy.

"I find it hard talking to people sometimes."

And so, she says, volunteering is a great way of chatting and meeting people.

"It also gives me somewhere to go and being around the art is wonderful."

Mrs Jones volunteers every now and then at Creative Gladstone - a community art space and gallery on the corner of William and Tank Sts.

"I answer questions about the art we sell and the workshops we hold," she said.

Also working at the Salvos store, she packs bric-a-brac onto the shelves.

"Someone else does the pricing, but I help put everything out neatly on the shelves for one afternoon a week," she said.

"There are lots of strange kitchen gadgets that come in.

"I don't know what they are but everyone else must because they are never there the next day!"
