Course gives budding actors chance to build skills

AFTER her production Wizard of Oz finished earlier this year, Natisha Strudwick's students had post-production blues.

"The cast were all saying they wish they were still all together and I have been asked recently about running weekly acting classes," she said.

So, Ms Strudwick has decided to hold a five-week short course in acting for anybody in the Gladstone community who is interested.

The first class will be held on March 23 and the last one on April 20.

So far, nine people up aged between 14 and 25 have signed up.

Ms Strudwick is happy with the response.

"I have some students in high school who are really keen to keep pushing themselves," she said.

"They are the type of kids who will study theatre at university."

Ms Strudwick said the viewpoints students would learn were based on a system by American drama practitioner Anne Bogart.

"There are nine tools and one example is architecture, tempo and response to the group," she said.

"It is about building a solid ensemble and being in a group where you trust one another."

The students would also be gaining skills in working toward the next Conspire Isis Theatre Ensemble production, The Crucible, she said.

"The production is in October and it is an Arthur Miller classic," Ms Strudwick said.

"It is based on witchcraft and is about a personal vendetta a group of teenage girls has.

"I like to do plays a little bit different from the mainstream."

Ms Strudwick said the classes would include practical work and learning of a play. Some homework would be set.

The classes will be held at Ms Strudwick's driveway at1 Endeavour St, Gladstone from 5-7pm.

Call Ms Strudwick on 0413 310 983 or email nlstrudwick@gmail.com to book a spot.

It is $10 a session or $15 for a casual rate.

A free performance will be held on April 24 to mark the end of the course.
