Actor 'flies high' to win festival

AUSTRALIAN actor Samuel Johnson has won Melbourne's wackiest event, donning a giant bra-themed 'flying machine' to take out the annual Birdman Rally at the Moomba festival.

The Secret Life of Us and Molly star held off a balloon horse and Frankenstein's bride to take out the coveted title, somersaulting off a bridge and into the Yarra River strapped to his home-made "boob chute”.

His flying machine contraption was covered in bras, and was created to raise awareness of the Love Your Sister foundation which supports cancer research.

"Just to participate (in the Birdman Rally) means you're a part of cultural iconography, and to win is just unbelievable; I can't believe it,” Johnson said.

The first rally was held in 1976 and remains a crowd favourite at the annual Moomba Festival, with thousands lining the banks of the river to watch.
