Pie or hamburger... why not have both?
EVER found it hard to choose between that delicious meat pie or mouth watering hamburger for lunch?
With a "why not have both" attitude, Coolum baker Graham Martin created his popular hamburger pie.
Each summer for the past 10 years, the multi-award-winning Dough Fusion has brought back the popular Frankenstein-style pie, which is basically a hamburger in pie pastry.
"It's got a meat pattie, pickles, mustard, tomato relish and cheese all in a pie," Mr Martin said.
"The surfers love it. We're bringing it back in the next few weeks."
The team has never been one to shy away from quirky pies with the meatball, bangers and mash and seafood pies all proving to be strong sellers for those keen to try something a little different.
"A lot of times you just sit down and look at a meal and think, 'How could I make this into a pie?'" Mr Martin said.
And it's not only his quirky pies which are causing a stir, the bakehouse recently snapped up an impressive 12 awards in the Great Aussie Pie Competition, including two gold for its mince meat and oven roasted mushroom and chunky steak pies.
"It's not just the ingredients, you have to put some love into it," Mr Martin said.
Mr Martin, who along with bakers Ricky, Trevor and Justin, have made a name for themselves by providing some of the best pies on the Coast for the past 12 years.
The bakery also won best pie in Australia for their chunky steak pie in 2008. "We always try and top everything we do; there's no doubt about that," he said.
The Great Aussie Pie Competition national manager Danielle Woodridge said the bakehouse had been successful in the past.
"Graham is such a great pie producer and always does well," Ms Woodridge said.
"He's been in the industry a long time and he's very passionate about what he does."
Dough Fusion is located in Coolum Village Shopping Village.
