Academy class shines through down on the coast
MARTIAL ARTS: It has been a successful ride for several from the Gladstone Martial Arts Academy on the Sunshine Coast.
Eight Zen Do Kai and two Muay Thai students from the academy also had a productive campaign.
David Borg has a new Muay Thai Black Singlet while Ryan Lambert set an a new high standard for technique, intensity and work-rate on his way to earning his 2nd Degree Black Singlet in Muay Thai.
GMAA head instructors Rob and Zoe McIntyre both earned their next level black belt ranks
Rob passed his Zen Do Kai 5th Dan Black Belt grading and earned the master teacher's title of 'Shihan' and he said there's more to accomplish.
"Now my goals include training my bum off and passing by Brazilian Jiu Jitsu brown belt and also beginning my journey in the martial art style of 'Kudo'," Rob said.
"I am very much looking forward to putting on a white belt and starting from the beginning again."
Zoe achieved the title of 'Renshi' after she passed her Zen Do Kai 4th Dan Black Belt grading.
"I not only got great feedback about my own performance, but I got huge congratulations as Zoe's teacher on her brilliant performance," Rob said.
"She did an amazing job and is now the highest ranking female Zen Do Kai black belt ever in regional Queensland."
The judging panel consisted of five 9th Degree Red Belts and more than 30 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Dan Black Belts.
There were 299 students tested at the grading day from white belt to 5th Dan Black Belt and competitors were aged from four to 56 years.
The GMAA has been operating in Gladstone for 20 years and is Central Queensland's biggest martial arts school and has the region's biggest and best-equipped martial arts training facilities.
The academy offers classes for children and adults in the martial arts of Zen Do Kai, Muay Thai/Kickboxing, Mixed Martial Arts and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Martial arts has been a big part of Rob's life and he has been training self-defence for 30 years and Zen Do Kai for 28 years, 20 of which has been in Gladstone.
He also holds black belts in four other martial arts as well as a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Zen Do Kai was created as an Australian Martial Art in 1970 by the infamous Bob Jones.
Jones was bodyguard to rock bands like ABBA, The Rolling Stones and artists Joe Cocker, Stevie Nicks to name a few.
