Abbott commissions second white paper in 12 months
LESS than a year after the previous Federal Government released a white paper on investment in Defence, the Abbott Government will repeat the process.
The 2013 white paper, which updated the investment priorities for Defence from the previous document in 2009, will be overruled by the new document.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced the government would repeat the process for a "costed, affordable plan" for his government's objectives.
A key aim of the paper will be to return spending on Australia's defence and national security to a full 2% of Australia's GDP over the next 10 years.
Mr Abbott said in a statement it would be informed by the as-yet-unreleased Commission of Audit recommendations and a new 10-year capability plan.
And despite the last defence force posture review being completed less than two years ago, the new paper would again examine the defence presence in north Australia.
Mr Abbott said it would also draw on the work of the Northern Australia committee inquiry already underway, and would involve some consultations.
