Abandoned safe unlocks year-old burglary mystery
POLICE have recovered a large amount of cash stolen from an elderly man's Darling Downs home more than a year ago.
The brazen break and enter that saw a 76-year-old man's home broken into and a safe containing cash, opals and personal documents stolen shocked the small community of Inglewood.
Police made a breakthrough in the case recently when a member of the public found the safe abandoned on the side of a road in a nearby forestry.
It was then police made an amazing discovery when they looked in one of the safe compartments to find the bundled cash still remained in a small bag amongst other personal documents.
The large amount of cash had been sitting all this time in the Inglewood bush within 10km of the town.
Forensic police have combed the area it was located and the safe itself, in the hope that more evidence will come to light in this matter. It would appear that the thieves had some local knowledge of the area.
The victim was extremely relieved to have the money returned however the opals at this stage still remain outstanding and police are keen to speak to anyone who may have knowledge of this offence.
The money has now been banked which hopefully will be safer for our complainant.
