Batsmen smash rivals out of cricket challenge
YARALLA'S batsmen smashed rivals Rockhampton Brothers out of the Capricornia Cricket Challenge match on Saturday, amassing a huge 260 from their 40 overs.
The Gladstone side never looked back, being miserly with runs when bowling and making the chase impossible for Brothers.
Yaralla opener Dylan Cross was the first to make a big impact, his powerful hitting getting the home side to 1-72 after 11 overs.
Cross combined with Waqar Yunus to get Yaralla through to 94 before joining Corey Windridgeback in the sheds, out for 65 off 49 balls.
It was Brendan Kelly who took over forcing the issue with the Brothers bowlers.
Arriving at the crease with 24 overs remaining, Kelly faced only 63 balls for his influential 97 runs.
Cross and Kelly built the foundation for Yaralla, with a few smaller additions by the middle order to get to the total of 7-260 off 40 overs.
"It was a good start by the boys," star batsman Kelly said. "We kept piling the runs on throughout the innings."
Rockhampton then had their turn on the flat deck at Yaralla Oval.
The opening pair proved to not be out of their depth against the Yaralla bowling attack, but the run rate of over six an over proved too much.
Yaralla were held out for 28 overs, but by that stage the required run rate was over 10 an over, Brothers at 1-133.
The rest was only mathematics, Brothers getting to 7-202 off the 40 overs, but never a serious threat to win.
"It was the right result," Kelly said. "They had to go from the word go, it was six an over and they were behind.
"We tried to be stingy, especially the last 20.
"We bowled the off side of the wicket and enticed them to hit out."
