Drag racing at Benaraby tonight and tomorrow

MOTOR SPORT: It's the penultimate round of the Summit Racing Queensland Championships at Benaraby Raceway on the weekend.

Drivers and riders from across most parts of Central Queensland will fight for points in a quest to win the coveted Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA) Christmas Tree trophy across seven brackets at the competition of the third and final event at Roma's Ironbark Raceway on November 4.

"We have a bumper field of entries already pre-nominated with more expected on the day," Central Queensland Drag Racing Association president Lee Davis said.

"The format of the ANDRA-based event is three rounds of racing between the regional tracks of Palmyra, Benaraby and Roma with the winner decided on points accumulated between the three locations and receiving a coveted ANDRA Christmas Tree.

"We have a field of Supercharged Outlaws competing this weekend which should be quite a spectacle."

Davis, who also will race in the Street category, added tonight's Off Street racing will be over a quarter-mile from 6pm.

"Tonight's test and tune will be over the standard quarter-mile and the eighth-mile championship round commencing from midday tomorrow," he said.

"There will be food and beverage available both days.

"Tomorrow's racing from midday will be over the eighth mile format with these races typically being won or lost on the start line," he said

There are several local drivers and riders who Davis predicts to feature among the crucial points race.

Gavin List is one of those who will fly the Benaraby flag in the Super Sedan class while Super Street pair Brett Keenan and Richard Date headline locals.

Tom Parry is another from the Gladstone area who should race well in the Super Gas class.

Local Junior Dragster Kilarney Back is tipped to have a successful Saturday as well.

"We have people from north of Mackay down to Brisbane and west to Roma and all points in between coming," Davis said.

"We are hoping for close to 100 competitors across the seven categories."
