M'boro jobs saved by $20 million Downer Rail deal

A NEW contract worth more than $20 million to Downer Rail will secure jobs for work on Queensland Rail passenger trains over two years.

Announced by Maryborough MP Bruce Saunders on Friday, the contract will be to repair the bogies on the trains.

Downer Rail production general manager David Hill said the contract was awarded after Downer Rail re-aligned its work priorities.

"We've been re-inventing ourselves as more of a maintenance facility rather than a new build facility," he said.

"It's part of our revolution."

The contract will secure jobs for about two years, taking the bogie off the new model trains.

A bogie is the part of the train that holds the wheels, brakes and other instruments.

"It's a good job for us, it's a big job and it's over two-and-a-half years," Mr Hill said.

"It's a steady stream of work for Maryborough which is a good thing.

"It secures some of the existing staff in facility."

Mr Saunders said the announcement was great news for Maryborough and the Downer Rail staff.

"This will secure a number of jobs over the next couple of years, to ensure the city has a vibrant manufacturing industry into the future," he said.

"When the time comes again I will be fighting to ensure there is local content in any contract for new rolling stock.

"It is vital for Maryborough that we have ongoing manufacturing destination and as one of the strengths of employment for our city"

Fraser Coast Mayor Gerard O'Connell added his congratulations.

"This is absolutely the confidence boost not just Maryborough but the Fraser Coast needs," he said.

"I want to congratulate the staff and the management of Downer.

"They have shown by their tenacity, professionalism and most importantly their skill-set that they're capable of making and maintaining first-class rolling stock equipment."
