Run of severe drink-driving arrests round off holiday season
A SPATE of high-range drink driving arrests in central Queensland rounded off the Christmas holiday road safety campaign.
The 12-day campaign ended on Saturday, but not before a driver was caught with a blood-alcohol reading of 0.262% at Mooloolah Valley - more than five times the legal limit.
Another driver blew 0.221% at Bli Bli while a drink driver was caught with a 0.209% reading at Park Avenue on Saturday.
Police impounded eight cars on the campaign's final day and nabbed a Maryborough driver travelling at 97kmh in a 60kmh zone.
There was one fatal crash in the central Queensland region over the Christmas period - a head-on smash near Bundaberg on Thursday which killed one man and injured five others.
Police said 86 people were injured on the roads, down from 93 over the same period last year.
They performed 41,038 random breath tests in the region and caught 219 drivers over the legal alcohol limit, 46 fewer than the 2013 holiday season.
Speeding violations were up with 5837 people being issued tickets, compared to 5564 last year.
Seatbelt infringements were marginally down on the 2013 holiday period with 21 fewer people being issued tickets.
The central police region comprises Mackay, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Gladstone, Sunshine Coast, Fraser Coast and Gympie
The statistics are part of Queensland Police's Christmas road safety campaign, Operation Crossroads that kicked off on December 23 and ended on Saturday. -APN NEWSDESK
