Newspoll shows Abbott down to 39% a year on from election

ONE year after the Abbott government was elected on a 45.6% primary vote, its core support in the community has dropped to just 39%, the latest Newspoll shows.

The Newspoll published in The Australian on Tuesday showed Labor had also increased its primary vote slightly, to 35% up from 33% at the election.

But the poll shows the biggest winners one year out from the election seem to be The Greens, sitting on a primary vote of 14%, up 5% since the election and three points in the past fortnight.

The support for the minor party does not seem to be spread across the crossbench, however, with independents and "other" minor parties, down three points in the past fortnight to the 12% it had at the election.

It shows most voters have shied away from both major parties in recent months, in favour of The Greens, while other crossbenchers have remained steady overall for the year. - APN NEWSDESK
