Labor calls on Senate to end Commission into Trade Unions

THE Labor Party is set to call on the Senate to endorse a motion for the Governor-General to terminate the Royal Commission into Trade Union Governance and Corruption.

Labor Senator Penny Wong announced the move yesterday and the matter could be voted on today.

Mr Heydon has been under pressure to resign since it was revealed he agreed to address a Liberal Party fundraiser.

He cancelled the speaking commitment the day Fairfax Media broke the story.

Sen Wong's motion calls on Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove to revoke official letters appointing Justice Heydon as commissioner.

The motion would ask the Senate to send Sir Peter a letter that would argue Justice Heydon's conduct in accepting the invitation had "failed to uphold the standards of impartiality" expected of a royal commissioner.

It is unclear how the Senate crossbench will vote on the matter, given many have not released expressed their opinions, other than Senator Nick Xenophon's call last week for Justice Heydon to provide a full explanation.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions is considering its legal options, including applying to have Justice Heydon removed as Commissioner.

ACTU chief Dave Oliver told ABC Radio yesterday that the union peak body and its affiliates would "be sitting down over the short term" to consider their options.

Justice Heydon dismissed the accusation of bias on Monday, saying he had "overlooked" a connection between the organisers of the event and the Liberal Party.
