Daycare providers scramble for development funding

ABOUT 3000 long day care providers across the nation have applied for a share of a $200 million pool of development funding for early childhood teachers.

The Abbott government funding pool replaced Labor's early years quality fund with a similar "professional development program" last year.

Almost 3000 of the 6000 eligible long day care providers and centres have already applied for the funding, with a fortnight left to apply.

Assistant Education Minister Sussan Ley said the "flood of applications" showed a desire to improve education quality and "care for our kids".

The program gives centres up to $10,450 for each full-time teacher, with extra funds for regional and remote areas, to help with training costs.
