Dads unaware they can claim $1281 under PPL scheme

MUMS might be better off, but dads seem unaware they can claim $1281 under the Federal Government's Paid Parental Leave scheme, a new report says.

An independent evaluation of the scheme says two thirds of new fathers are missing out on two weeks of government-funded pay.

However, The PPL Evaluation: Final Report found the scheme had improved the mental health of new mothers.

About 521,000 mothers have received 18 weeks' pay of $641 under the scheme while only 36% of new fathers have taken up the offer of two weeks' wages.

Fathers are eligible if they pass a work test and earn less than $150,000.

The rate of pay for both women and men is based on the national minimum wage.

"The evaluation shows that PPL is delivering benefits for families, and it is helping women to get back to work after they've had children," Social Services Minister Scott Morrison said.

"It also identified benefits for employers, with working mothers who receive parental leave pay much more likely to return to their same employer than they did before the introduction of a PPL scheme."
