Clinton second on league ladder
CLINTON has moved into second on the Capricorn league ladder courtesy of a convincing 4-1 victory over Parkana on Saturday in the penultimate round of the regular season.
Ryan Bellert, Tyler Stross and Kelly Searston all found the mark for Clinton, while an own goal from Parkana rounded out the scoring for the victors.
Clinton coach Derek Horton said that his side could have won by an even greater margin given the number of chances they created.
“It was a reasonably comfortable win, I was actually disappointed we didn't get a few more goals but the boys played quite well,” he said.
Clinton's third win in four games means that a win or a draw with third-placed Nerimbera on Saturday would secure a top two finish behind leaders Capricorn Coast, while a loss could drop either side to fourth depending on other results.
Horton said his side's late season form was largely due to the return of a number of key players from injury.
“We've put a bit of a run together but I think it has a lot to do with the fact that we've got 95% of our players back now,” he said.
“I'm really happy with the way the boys stuck at it and kept us in touch especially in the first half of the season when we really struggled with numbers.
“I was always confident that once we got personnel back we'd start moving up the ladder again.
“Their attitude is really good, they're keen at the moment and there's healthy competition for spots in the side.”
In other games, Southside beat CQ Wildcats 3-0; Bluebirds felled Yaralla 4-3 in a goal scoring frenzy; Cap Coast played out a scoreless draw with Frenchville and Central defeated Nerimbera 4-3.
Capricorn Coast is assured of first place with an unassailable seven-point lead on the ladder, with Clinton, Bluebirds and Nerimbera all guaranteed a place in the top four.
