Australia Hendra vaccinations reach quarter million

THE 250,000th dose of the Hendra vaccine has been administered in Australia.

Four people have died from the virus, which is spread to horses by bats.

CSIRO Australian Animal Health Laboratory lead researcher Dr Deborah Middleton said after four outbreaks this year, the battle against the disease was far from over.

"Uptake of 250,000 doses in less than two years is a tremendous result and we hope support for vaccination will continue to strengthen to help reduce the risk of Hendra virus," she said.

Equine Veterinarians Australia president Nathan Anthony urged horse owners to use the vaccine.

"Do not risk your horse's life, and help protect human lives against the devastating effects of this disease," he said.

Some horse owners refuse to use the vaccination for fear it will cause other health problems in their animals.
