Adani mine approved by Queensland Parliament

THE Carmichael coal mine has received two major boosts after the parliament passed a motion to provide all necessary approvals to the mine and the final landholder compensation deal was agreed to.

In Parliament on Tuesday night LNP leader Lawrence Springborg moved the motion for the government to "immediately provide all state government approvals necessary for Adani's Carmichael mine to proceed".

Mr Springborg said he understood the Adani-run project had cleared all environmental and mining hurdles but was still to be approved.

Speaking in Parliament Mackay Labor MP Julianne Gilbert said the mine going ahead was "critical to the future" of the Mackay area.

"It is no secret that my electorate has been hard hit by the current slump in commodity prices as have many of the regional centres in Queensland. As a service centre for the Bowen Basin, our region's economy has flourished on the back of the resources boom," she said.

Queensland Resources Council's Michael Roche said bipartisan support for the project should "never be in any doubt".

But LNP Hinchinbrook MP Andrew Cripps told the parliament the project had stalled under the current government as it did not truly support the mining sector.

"They do not really support the Carmichael mine project proposed by Adani and they have never really supported it. It is a fake, phantom support that they have always provided to the resources sector," he said.

On Wednesday Adani announced the final landholder compensation agreement had been signed off.

"This agreement, which allows for the inclusion of land within the surface area of the mining lease, represents another important milestone in ensuring the company's mine, rail and port projects proceed; and another step in Adani's plans to build a long-term future with Queensland," Adani said in a statement. - ARM NEWSDESK
