850 sign petition in three days for Annette Mason inquest

COMMUNITY sentiment surrounding The Chronicle's online petition calling for murdered Toowoomba teen Annette Jane Mason's killers to be brought to justice has intensified.

Queensland Attorney-General Yvette D'ath rejected The Chronicle's call for her to use her powers and order a coronial inquest into the teen's brutal murder.

But she said she felt sorry for the family's loss nonetheless.

More than 850 people have signed the petition in less than three days.

People who have signed the petition left comments of anger and disgust at Ms D'ath's inaction and unwillingness to give closure to Annette's heartbroken parents, who have waited more than 25 years for answers.

"I am sure if the people who can make this happen were affected by similar devastation and loss to their families, then justice would be served without delay," Jodie Hogan said.

David Jenkins said society had failed to protect Annette while she lived.

"So justice for her and her long-suffering family is the least we can do for her," he said.

Brenda Walsh said everyone deserved justice.

"Nobody deserves to die in these circumstances. A coronial inquest is the least that needs to be done," she said.

Miss Mason's badly beaten and partly naked body was found on November 19, 1989, concealed under a doona in the sunroom of a house she shared with two other women at 131 Anzac Ave.

It is believed Miss Mason, 15, was murdered sometime between 5am and 7am before her body was discovered around 2.10pm.

An autopsy conducted at the time revealed Miss Mason died from extensive head injuries.
