8 habits of healthy people you need to adopt

CRACKED THE CODE: We've found the top eight habits of healthy people.
CRACKED THE CODE: We've found the top eight habits of healthy people. Ridofranz

THERE'S nothing quite like a solid sleep-in before work and a Netflix binge at the other end of the day.

But if you're staying true to your 2017 resolution to get fit, active and healthy, you may need to cut back on your couch time and assess your current routine.

We scoured the internet to source the top eight habits of healthy people you need to integrate into your daily life right now:

1.       Get up early and get it done:  Making the most of the hours you have in the morning can work wonders for busy-bees. Try getting up a few hours earlier, hitting the gym or getting in some exercise before you head to work. Not only will you feel better for the rest of the day, but you won't have to worry about squeezing in a workout after work.

2.       Get enough sleep: Now you'll be getting up a couple of hours earlier, you'll need to go to bed earlier too. Aim for 7-8 hours a night to ensure you get adequate rest. If you've always been a 'late-to-bed' person, train yourself to hit the hay earlier. And no, you don't need to watch another episode of Game of Thrones before bed.

3.       Set realistic goals and track progress: There is only a small percentage of us who have the right genetic make-up to look like Jessica Alba, so don't think you're going to be her doppelganger after two weeks of working out (I know, it's heartbreaking). Set realistic goals - maybe it's swimming an extra lap each session, or committing to four gym classes a week. And make sure you track your progress - write it in your diary, or do it like NBA star LeBron James who apparently is a fan of iPhone apps to track his fitness goals.

4.       Carry a water bottle with you everywhere: If you need to up your water intake, try carrying a water bottle around with you all day. Chances are, you'll be sipping on it without even realising and you'll feel great for it.

5.       Meal prep: It's not just body builders and athletes who meal prep. Setting aside a couple of hours on the weekend to plan and prepare your food for the week is the best way to avoid finding yourself at the bakery across from work at lunchtime every day. Also, cook in bulk and freeze meals so you have a quick 'grab-and-go' option when you haven't had time to prepare anything. Don't forget to include healthy snacks in your prep work - the 3pm hunger strike is when many people reach for the vending machine for a sugary snack, but you'll be less tempted if you have something ready to go.

6.       Make exercise a priority: Schedule workouts into your weekly schedule as you would a hairdresser appointment or work meeting. Highlight it in seven colours if you need to make sure you don't conveniently forget what time that HIIT session starts.

7.       Keep it fun: Sir Richard Branson says if he's no longer having fun with a project, it's time to move on. The same goes for exercise. If you hate running, don't run! Find a fun activity you do like and keep mixing it up so you never get bored.

Maybe Zumba is your style of exercise? There is more to being active than running and lifting weights!

8.       Get outdoors: These days we all need a break from technology, stress and clutter. Best way to do it, is get outside. Whether it's a day pottering in the garden, walking the dog, fishing or going for a hike, your body and mind will thank you for it.

If you're serious about living a healthy and active life, the above eight points are a great place to start. Check out Join the Movement for more information.
