60 Minutes drama: children snatched from street

NINE has aired video believed to show the moment an Australian mother attempted to retrieve her children off a Beirut street.

Reporter Tara Brown and her 60 Minutes crew have been detained while filming in the Lebanese capital.

Brisbane mother Sally Faulkner had hired an international retrieval agency as a last-ditch attempt to bring the children back to Australia, after they were taken to the Middle East last year by their father Ali el-Amine.

Grainy CCTV footage appears to show two young children - believed to be Ms Faulkner's six-year-old daughter Lahela and four-year-old son Noah - snatched from two women by a group who emerged from a parked car.

The children are whisked into the car, which speeds away and leaves the two women behind, Nine reported.

Ms Brown was in Beirut with senior producer Steven Rice and a cameraman as part of a plan to bring the kids back to their Brisbane mother.

The children are understood to have been taken to the Middle East by their Lebanese father, who told their mother it was for a short holiday.

The operation involved a child recovery agency which had separated the children from their paternal grandmother.

But the escape of the children to a safe house with their mother was short-lived, with Fairfax Media reporting Beirut police found the crew and sought to interview them.

Fairfax also reports authorities have seized a car and a boat used in the operation.

60 Minutes has confirmed the team has been detained and was now working to sort out the situation.

It follows a crew from ABC Four Corners being detained in Malaysia after they confronted Prime Minister Najib Razak over unexplained political funding.

60 Minutes is also no stranger to overseas drama, with Liz Hayes and a crew attacked by refugees in Sweden.
