$500 fine for stealing $28 body spray pack

LOOKING forward to Christmas with gifts under the tree, Christopher Tranter did not know a sweet-smelling body-spray travel pack he asked his girlfriend to buy him for Christmas would bring such misery.

Tranter, 35, told Gladstone Magistrates Court he did not realise his girlfriend had left the store with the pack without paying the $28.90.

Tranter then failed to return the spray or to pay.

Police raided his home and found the deodorant pack in his bedroom.

He pleaded guilty to stealing and was fined $500 and ordered to pay half its value in restitution.

The magistrate told Tranter he had an extensive history for dishonesty.
