5 Seconds of Summer lads deliver Aussie win at MTV VMAs

WHILE our hopes were pinned on Iggy Azalea taking home a Moonman at today's MTV Video Music Awards, it was 5 Seconds of Summer who delivered a win for Australia.

Rapper Azalea, pop singer/songwriter Sia and pop punk band 5 Seconds of Summer were all up for gongs at the VMAs, which honour the best in music clips.

Azalea and Sia lost the top award of Video of the Year to Miley Cyrus, who cried while a homeless man accepted the award on her behalf.

Sia did have a win in the non-publicly voted professional categories, taking out Best Choreography for her hit Chandelier.

Azalea had a win of sorts thanks to her collaboration with Ariana Grande on the song Problem, which was named Best Pop Video.

Australia's biggest winners turned out to be teen favourites 5 Seconds of Summer.

While the four Sydney lads weren't named this year's Artist to Watch, they did take home a pre-broadcast Moonman for Best Lyric Video for their song Don't Stop.

The band received more than 78 million votes via social media and #congrats5sos was one of the top trending topics during the awards broadcast.

Lorde's perplexing nomination in the Best Rock Video category delivered the Kiwi chart-topper a win, while Katy Perry's Dark Horse was named Best Female Video.

Today's awards were dull compared to last year's raunchy twerking performance by Cyrus and Robin Thicke, or Kanye West's interruption of Taylor Swift's acceptance speech in 2009.

A near wardrobe malfunction which saw singer Nicki Minaj holding together her dress during a performance with Jessie J and Ariana Grande was the closest thing to a shocking moment.

R&B singer Beyonce accepted the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award (the VMAs' equivalent to a lifetime achievement award) and then closed the show with a medley of songs from her self-titled album before being joined on stage by her husband Jay Z and their daughter Blue Ivy.
