5 tragic crashes that shocked the Gladstone region

IN LIGHT of this morning's news claiming the Bruce Highway is among the top 10 most dangerous Queensland roads, we have compiled a list of some of our more devastating road crashes.

There is no way of measuring the tragedy of horrific car crashes, with many survivors living with lifelong ailments and trauma.

But these crashes were particularly horrific, rattling the Gladstone region after they claimed the lives.

1. Pregnant teen among dead in crash

August, 2011

A PREGNANT teenager travelling in the back seat of a sedan was among two who died in a horrific three-vehicle crash on the Bruce Highway.

The tragedy also took the life of a the front seat passenger, a16-year-old girl.

A 19-year-old Rockhampton man was driving the car when it collided with a ute 25km south of Miriam Vale.

The pregnant teenager was airlifted to hospital with critical injuries, but later died.

A 21-year-old Sunshine Coast man, also a passenger, was airlifted to hospital with critical injuries.

2.    Multi vehicle crash claims another life on the Bruce

2011

A man was killed instantly when the van he was driving collided with a truck north of Benaraby that afternoon.

The accident occurred on a northbound overtaking lane 3km north of the Gladstone-Benaraby crossroads on February 1, 20111.

Two other vehicles were involved, including a four-wheel drive and a truck.

No other people were injured in the crash.

It was believed the man, the sole occupant of the van, was overtaking the four-wheel drive at the time, and the truck was travelling south when the collision occurred.

3. Crash takes teen's life     

An 18 year old girl was killed instantly when her car and a semi-trailer collided at the intersection of Gladstone-Benaraby Road and the Bruce Highway June 21, 2005.

Karla Pollard's Mazda sedan and the semi-trailer collided when she turned right at the Benaraby intersection, heading north on the Bruce Highway.

The truck driver was not injured.

4. Young dad-to-be killed in tragedy

2010

THE festive season is meant to be a time for family, but on December 1, 2010, one young police officer didn't make it home in time for Christmas.

A fatal accident on the Bruce Highway about 15 kms south of Mt Larcom took his life.

Oxley District Traffic Branch Sergeant Dan Stiller, 33 at the time, was escorting a wide load when an empty truck travelling in the opposite direction jack-knifed in wet weather and hit the service motorcycle Dan Stiller was riding.

5. Two dead after truck rolls into creek bed on Eight Mile Road

April, 2007 

TWO lives were claimed in an accident in early April 2007 when a truck crashed through a road barrier and rolled into Eight Mile Creek.

Central Region Traffic Controller at the time Lyle Mitchell said it was believed the two men were travelling north on the Bruce Highway from Apple Tree Creek, near Gin Gin, when the crash occurred just before 4am.
