Times Gone By: QAL plant officially opened

3 August

1967: QAL Opening: The official opening of the Alumina Plant took place on Friday 4 August by the Premier of Queensland, Mr G. F. R. Nicklin.

Over 300 guests were flown to Brisbane for the pre-opening celebration dinner at Lennon's Hotel on Thursday evening.

On Friday morning in one of Australia's largest airlifts, the guests were flown in special chartered aircraft - Electras, Fokker Friendships and a Falcon Jet, to Gladstone for the official opening ceremony.

Guests were taken from the airport for a detailed inspection tour of the plant in nine specially chartered buses brought from the south.
