26,000 breath tests net 139 drink drivers

IT'S been a case of so far so good, when it comes to celebrations on the Coast, with revellers managing to keep behaviour in check.

Statewide figures show police have been extremely active, conducting more than 26,000 RBTs in the first three days of the Christmas Holiday Period crackdown, nabbing 139 drink drivers since December 23.

As for the Coast, the seaside destinations always prove popular with holidaymakers, and the festive mood, alcohol, and the water are often ingredients for trouble.

But not so far this holidays, according to Sunshine Coast Water Police Senior Constable Murray Lyons.

"Yeah it's not been too bad, we've had pretty good compliance," Snr Const Lyons said.

"It doesn't seem to be as busy as some years, out on the water."

Targeting licensing, registrations and safety equipment as well as operating marine vessels while drunk, Snr Const Lyons reminded boaties to be wary of local bar crossings.

"All of the waterways up here, the bar crossings are designated dangerous bar crossings, so that's Noosa, Maroochydore, Mooloolaba and Caloundra," he said.

"On boats under 4.8m long, all people must wear safety vests when crossing the bar."

As for the overnight total, 14 people were injured in nine traffic accidents during the 24 hours to midnight on December 25, however the death toll remained at zero by day three.
