1770 Dragons just too fiery for Bundaberg

THE 1770 Dragons were fiery in their race to the finish line at the Wide Bay Regatta, finishing just one second before Bundaberg to claim the title of this year's competition.

The team took on crews from Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Cooloola Coast at the event.

Rower Ruth Geck said they had been preparing for the tournament for weeks.

"It's like the perpetual trophy. We took it off Bundaberg, they won it last year," she said.

The team will now prepare for the state titles, which will be held in February.

"We love the sport because we're old and we can still paddle. One of our team members is over 70, so we get to go out and have fun. We always make it a real social thing when we compete."

They hope to have a junior team in their club by the next competition.
