149,000 jobs up for grabs in Australia at unemployment peak

LATEST employment figures show there were 149,000 unfilled Australian jobs at the same time unemployment hit a 12-year high of 6.3% in November.

Australian Bureau of Statistics researchers found the vast majority of vacancies were in the private sector (137,000), compared to 12,900 empty positions in the public sector.

The job vacancy report, released yesterday, found there were 3800 unfilled posts in the mining industry - a far cry from November, 2011, when the country was still in the midst of a mining boom and 10,300 jobs were on the table.

The biggest industry subsection, in terms of job vacancies, was in the science and technical services field - a broad line of work encompassing professions including scientific research, engineering, law, accountancy, veterinary science and computer systems design, among others.

There were 20,300 jobs up for grabs in the field in November.

Administration and support was close behind (17,800), followed by retail (17,100), accommodation and food services (14,800) and health care and social assistance (14,400).

Electricity, water, waste and gas services had by far the fewest vacancies, with just 500 empty jobs Australia-wide.

New South Wales had more vacancies than any other state (48,800), followed by Victoria (33,300) and Queensland (28,200).

Tasmania, which also had the highest unemployment rate of 7%, had the fewest jobs on offer, with just 2300 open positions.

The Northern Territory had the lowest unemployment rate in Australia (3.9%), compared to the national average of 6.3%.
