Police hunt for arsonist after 13 fires in 16 hours

POLICE are hunting an arsonist who deliberately lit 13 fires in the Kirkwood Rd area between 4pm on Friday and 11am on Saturday.

Gladstone police constable Rodney Tongiatama said the fires were suspicious and police were urging anyone with information to come forward.

"Whether someone has lit all 13, or some fires were lit and then caused the others, is under investigation," he said.

Gladstone fire station officer Simon Pearson said emergency services were first called to four simultaneous blazes just after 4pm on Friday.

"Firefighters were forced to back-burn and blacken the area to keep each of the fires under control and continued to do this until Saturday morning when the last one was under control," he said.

"No property damage or injuries were sustained.

"But fires in grassland with high temperatures and dry winds are always very serious."

Anyone with information can call Police Link on 131 444.
