100,000-panel Oakey solar farm changes design

A COMPANY planning to build a 100,000-panel solar farm near Oakey has been given permission from Toowoomba Regional Council to alter its design for the project.

Canadian Solar wants to build an 80 MW solar photovoltaic project 6.5km west of Oakey on the north side of the Warrego Hwy.

The changes include using a different, more efficient type of solar panel.

Canadian Solar says the new panels will result in a reduced footprint at the solar park, meaning fewer panels and mounting structures to achieve the same power output.

The changes will see the footprint of the development reduced from about 290ha to 202ha.

The company will also reconfigure the layout of the park after a request from the landowner to maximise the availability of good quality agricultural land.

Canadian Solar will no longer construct the plant on the southern lot of the land and instead use a larger section of another lot.

The land is owned by Dalmeny Farming Pty Ltd and is located at 12871 Warrego Hwy, Oakey.

Stage one of the development will generate 25MW and stage two 55MW.
