10 girls names shooting up the charts in 2018

HAVE a baby, they said! It'll be great, they said! Yeah, except for the pressure of choosing the perfect name for a person you haven't met yet.  That kind of forward planning can be torture for a woman with pregnancy brain. Luckily, lists help.  Lots of lists.

Or, do what I did and go to sleep asking for some advice from the baby names gods and wake up with something new right there! If that doesn't work for you, why not consider what other people like.

We've done a round-up of the top ten most popular names coming our way for baby girls in 2018.

Good luck. May the baby name force be with you.

#10 Hazel
Of Teutonic origin (that means Germanic), Hazel is a terrific choice for your future 'girl boss' because it literally translates as commander. But that tough exterior is balanced out by the 'nature' elements of the name, associations of earth and fertility. Hazels are also known to be excellent at understanding and learning.

#9 Ellie
Short for Eleanor or Eleanora, Ellie has a Greek origin. It's short which along with being associated with a sense of fun, it's also easy to remember (read: hard to forget). Ellie's are said to be good at expressing themselves, which makes it a great choice for a creative spirit! No wallflowers here :)

#8 Victoria
With our renewed appreciation for all things British  (I'm looking at you, The Crown) it's little wonder this classic and elegant name is back in fashion. Victoria has a Latin origin, meaning 'vitcory' which makes it a great choice for parents of a long-awaited little girls. Personality wise, Victoria's are said to be quick learners and very observant. A perfect name for your adorable clever clogs!

#7 Penelope
What's not to love about a name that comes with its nickname wrapped neatly inside. Penelope is a Greek name, meaning 'white shoulder' and has distinctly feminine and poised kind of feel;  a perfect choice for your little goddess. According to British website SheKnows Penelope's have a 'inner desire to express themselves through public speaking, acting, writing or singing' and strive to excel in everything they do.

#6 Savannah
Even the meaning of this gorgeous name is romantic and mysterious; taken from the Native American word, 'zabana' which means large grassy plane'. But choose this name for your girl at your own risk;  Savannah's are believed to be 'natural born performers' and love being the centre of attention.

#5 Kennedy
By far the most unusual name on the 2018 list, Kennedy is an Irish name that loosely translates to 'helmeted; helmed head'. Hmmm. Not the first word you'd be associating with your tiny bundle of joy but essentially Kennedy's are all about strength; considered natural-born leaders who are versatile, idealistic and intuitive. What more could you ask for in life?

#4 Violet
Of all the names of the list this one is my favourite. But don't just take my word for it! English in origin (meaning purple), Violet is soft and sweet, it's definitely a name that's as great for a baby as it is for an adult (an important point, wouldn't you say?). Experts agree Violets are generally highly imaginative, intuitive, and spiritual, with the ability to 'inspire anyone they meet'.

#3 Sadie
I can imagine a little pocket rocket girl with this name. Sadie is actually an abbreviation of the Hebrew name, Sarah. The name has long been associated with quiet, cooperative and sympathetic souls. Sadie's are also believed to be adaptable, trustworthy and 'know how to respect the confidence of others.' We all need a Sadie in our life, right?

#2 Charlotte
Swoon… there's something truly enchanting about this uber-feminine name. Of French origin it actually means 'tiny and feminine' - perfect for your fresh bundle of joy. Its sheer elegance makes it a great partner to most surnames and in terms of personality, Charlottes are said to be highly expressive souls. Frankly, if you don't choose it, we will!

#1 Emma
Drumroll, please! This four-letter name is predicted to be 2018's MOST popular choice - for lots of great reasons. Short and sweet, Emma is a German name meaning, 'complete, whole or universal' and has been on parents-to-be radar since Rachel and Ross gave birth to one on Friends back in 2002!  Personality-wise Emma's are winning on all fronts - they're arbiters of versatility, freedom and optimism. In other words, bring an Emma into your life, and everything will be roses.
