$10 cert 3 course popular in tough job market

ALMOST 20 job seekers have snatched the opportunity to gain a certificate three qualification for $10 in Gladstone this week.

They're now on day two of the course, offered by Get Certified, which is funded by the State Government's Certificate Three Guarantee program.

Gladstone mother of two Tamara Freeman said the extra qualifications will help her in her hunt for a job in Gladstone.

She's hoping to get back into the workforce after spending the last six years as a stay at home mum.

Now that both children are at school, she says it's the right time.

Without office experience, she says it's been difficult to secure work.

It was a similar story for another student, Stacey Plahn, who is preparing to get back into the workforce by 2018 when her children are at school and day care age.

Ms Freeman has worked in retail before, but she said she was hoping for a career change.

"People with more experience than me are getting the jobs.

"I believe the experience I've had working in retail, working with customers and answering calls, could be put into an office situation."

"From doing this course I hope that I can get a bit of an advantage over other people who might not have this qualification," she said.

Stacey Plahn is a stay at home mum, opting against day care for her two children because of the cost.

She said in two years' time she'll be ready to get back into the workforce when one child is at school and the other can go to day care.

"Admin is something I've always wanted to do.

"At the moment day-care is just too expensive to put two kids in there."

Another student, Krystal Brezigar was up skilling her computer knowledge.

She runs a small hair and makeup business from home and is ready to look for work in Gladstone.

"The opportunity to do a certificate three for $10 is just so good, I couldn't pass it off.

"These days the way Gladstone is going employers are going to look for this type of background and qualifications."

Residents are entitled to one discounted certificate three course, which Get Certified is offering in Gladstone this week.
