National curriculum rolls out

ELEMENTS of the Australian Curriculum have been rolled out at St Stephens Lutheran College in Gladstone.

Head of college Terry Schuster said a national curriculum made sense. Grade 4/5 teacher Amanda Perry agreed.

So far, English, maths and science subjects have been introduced at the school.

Ms Perry said her students had responded positively.

Being such a transient town with many families moving from interstate, Mr Schuster said a national curriculum was "good news" for Gladstone.

"We've dealt with the complication of people coming from interstate.

It's very exciting to have all states on the same page."

The expectations of the Australian Curriculum were slightly more "sophisticated".

"A year 10 student might be starting work that is traditionally year 11 work," Ms Schuster said.

He added that the school had started preparing for the roll out of some national subjects about 18 months ago.

Emphasis was placed on improving mathematics skills.

"We needed to improve (the students) by one year almost straight away. It's the catch up game, there are still some hurdles."

Mr Schuster said there was also an emphasis on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture.

"All Australians should have a good understanding of Aboriginal culture."

Australia's relationship with Asia was another focus.

"And we need to focus more on our nearest neighbours."  

He added that the Australian Curriculum aimed to better prepare students for grade 11 and 12.
