THE first of many trainees Bechtel is planning to employ over the next three to four years have begun full-time work on construction at the Queensland Curtis LNG project this week.

The trainees, Calvin Von Seden, Ilona Patullo and Geoffrey Prizeman, participated in a 20-week employment program and completed a Certificate II in Construction, delivered by CQ TAFE. Their studies formed part of the state and federally funded Gladstone Workforce Skilling Strategy.

Bechtel Gladstone general manager Kevin Berg said that the students were keen to build their careers in the construction industry.

“As one of the region’s largest employers, we want to give our local people the kind of training opportunities that will provide them with a solid foundation for the future career.” Mr Berg said.

This is particularly so for Ilona, a young mum who completed the course as a way to get back into the workforce.

“Bechtel has given me a new start and an opportunity to develop a career path. It’s such an exciting time to be in the construction industry. I love it!” Ms Patullo said.

Karen Bellert, Energy Skills Queensland project manager for the Gladstone Workforce Skilling Strategy, said she was delighted that companies like Bechtel and QCLNG had given their support and commitment.

“The strategy provides an opportunity for local job-seekers to receive specialised training that aligns to the needs of the Gladstone workforce,” Ms Bellert said.

QGC’s commitment to enhance opportunities for community benefit from the QCLNG project includes action plans for indigenous participation and employment and economic development. These commitments are cascaded down through contractual agreement to contractors like Bechtel, building the components of the project in partnership with local community organisations.
